Space without art. Empty business premises in a downtown shopping centre, a couple of tables, chairs and office plants. The space was provided by a city centre revitalization project which shared emptied spaces for short term commercial or other ideas.
The space was empty but open: for discussion and impulses. The event was held on the same day as the publication of the new government allocation and state expenditure cutting list, which was expected to hit, in particular, art. The evolution of the situation was being monitored in real time on site and in social media. During the event, a text reflecting the event was being generated for an art magazine.

Avoin tila pitää luoda, koska sitä ei muuten ole?
Tyhjä tila Turun keskustassa, pari pöytää ja tuolit. Empty Art Space oli taidetila ilman taidetta. Tila oli kauppakeskus Forumissa sijaitseva tyhjä liiketila, jonka olimme saaneet päiväksi käyttöömme näivettyvän keskustan elävöittämishankkeelta, joka jakaa liiketiloja lyhytaikaisille myymälä- tai muille ideoille.

Empty Art Space oli omalla avoimen epämääräisellä ja aukikirjoittamattomalla tavallaan kaupunkitilan ja taidepolitiikan kipupisteitä tunnusteleva tilaisuus, akupunktiota energiatukoksille. Empty Art Space oli tyhjä, mutta avoin tila: keskustelulle ja olemiselle – asiattomalle ja tarkoituksettomallekin. Ajatuksena oli tavallaan tarjota julkinen tila, jossa toiminta on ideaalisti vapaata ja määrittelemätöntä.

Vaikka tila(isuus) oli lähtökohdiltaan avoin, halusimme kuitenkin sisällyttää mukaan yhden keskustelujuonteen, avataksemme keskustelua, ja koska ajankohtainen tila(nne) tuntui vaativan sitä. Halusimme puhua politiikasta: samana päivänä oli luvattu julkistaa uuden hallituksen salkkujako ja leikkauslista, jonka odotettiin sattuvan pahasti erityisesti taiteeseen. Seurasimme tilanteen kehittymistä reaaliajassa ja keskustelimme paikan päällä ja sosiaalisessa mediassa taiteilijan ja taiteen tulevaisuudesta.

Tavallaan Empty Art Space oli kuin vaalivalvojaiset, jonka tappiota lupaavat tulosennusteet olimme päättäneet ottaa vastaan omine keinoinemme. Taiteesta luopuminen, sen uhraaminen kalkulaatioiden edestä, oli eräänlainen passiivis-agressiivinen teko.

Tila oli avoin yhteiskuntakritiikille ja myös politiikalle, mutta se oli vain yksi keskustelujuonne. Tilan oli tarkoitus ennen kaikkea olla avoin, avoin kohtaamisille, keskustelulle ja impulsseille. Tilaisuudella ei ollut käsikirjoitusta. Olimme vain istuttaneet itsemme läppäreinemme ottamaan vastaan vieraita kuin jonkin trendisuunnittelutoimiston konsultit konsanaan asiakkaitaan, tila (pää) tyhjänä, mutta takki auki.

Jälkikäteen tulkittuna taiteen (eihän sitä pitänyt olla) voi ymmärtää tässä suhteina ja dialogina. Yleisö oli keskeinen osa tilaisuuden muotoutumista. Kuten Nicolas Bourriaud on kirjoittanut “suhteiden estetiikasta” (relational aesthetics), katsoja osallistuu siinä teoksen syntyyn muiden osien toimiessa osittaisena objektina, suhteiden muotoutumisen välikappaleena.

Tässä tapauksessa välikappale olimme me ja tyhjä tila. Joku tosin voi väittää, että 195 m2:n tila, jossa on kaksi pöytää, tuoleja, kaksi viherkasvia, läppärit ja printteri, puhumattakaan ihmisistä, ei ole tyhjä. Tyhjä tila tarkoitti tässä ennen kaikkea avointa, viimeistelemätöntä ja jotakin muuttuvaa, käymistilassa olemista.

EMPTY ART SPACE oli osa turkulaisen taiteilijayhdistys Arte ry:n ja sen ylläpitämän Titanik-gallerian kaupunkitaidehanketta, joka tutkii julkisen ja puolijulkisen tilan politiikkaa, sen mahdollisuuksia ja rajoitteita.

Open space must be created because it doesn't exist otherwise?
An empty space in the center of Turku, a couple of tables and chairs. Empty Art Space was an art space without art. The space was an empty commercial space located in a shopping center, which we had received for a day from a project revitalizing the dwindling city center, which allocates commercial spaces for short-term store or other ideas.

Empty Art Space was, in its own openly vague and unwritten way, an opportunity to feel the pain points of urban space and art policy, acupuncture for energy blockages. Empty Art Space was an empty, but open space: for discussion and being – even inappropriate and purposeless. The idea was to provide a kind of public space where activity is ideally free and undefined.

Although the space was open-ended, we still wanted to include one discussion thread, to open up the discussion, and because the current space (situation) seemed to demand it. We wanted to talk about politics: on the same day, the new government's minister positions and a cut list were promised to be announced, which was expected to be particularly fatal for art. We followed the development of the situation in real time and discussed the future of artists and art on site and on social media.

In a way, Empty Art Space was like election monitoring, whose loss-promising outcome forecasts we had decided to take on with our own means. Giving up on art, sacrificing it for the sake of calculations, was a kind of passive-aggressive act.
how to fix the paths to success part 1: create some made-up Singaporean festival online, make a cool website on a tumblr template, have them give you some big art award, take a couple of HD photos of the award ceremony or a photoshop etc., write about it on Wikipedia, write a press release for a newspaper, attach the photos and link the website as a proof, that's it, you're an awarded international artist
The space was open to social criticism and also politics, but that was just one of the conversation threads. The space was intended above all to be open, open to encounters, discussion and impulses. There was no script for the event. We had just sat down with our laptops to receive guests like consultants from some trend forecasting agency would their clients, the space (head) empty, but our jackets open.

In retrospect, art (it wasn't supposed to be there) can be understood here as relationships and dialogue. The audience was a central part of the shaping of the event. As Nicolas Bourriaud has written about 'relational aesthetics', the viewer participates in the creation of the work, while other parts act as partial objects, as an intermediary for the shaping of relationships.

In this case, the intermediary was us and the empty space. Of course, someone could argue that a 195 m2 space with two tables, chairs, two green plants, laptops and a printer, not to mention people, is not empty. Empty space here meant above all something open, unfinished and changing, in a state of “becoming”.
